TASUKI -襷- Project launches its second phase with expanded aquatic and terrestrial survey fields

Leave a Nest, together with Asahi Organic Materials, Focus Systems, Hylable, Fishpass, the Regional Collaboration Center of the University of Fukui, and the Research Center for Biodiversity at Ryukoku University, launched the second phase of the TASUKI -襷- Project on May 9, 2026.

Background

Global biodiversity has declined by 69 percent over the past 50 years, and the 30 by 30 goal calls for conserving at least 30 percent of land and sea by 2030. Yet methods for managing and measuring biodiversity are not standardized, and practical verification in real environments remains limited.

TASUKI enables the next generation to use advanced technologies to assess biodiversity and develop the ability to notice the richness of nature and take action. The first phase involved four schools around the Tama River basin and Lake Biwa. In the second phase, the fields expand to aquatic and terrestrial environments, with six schools participating: environmental DNA analysis will be used for river biodiversity in the aquatic program, while sound analysis will be used to assess forest biodiversity in the terrestrial program.
